“FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE PERSON’S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c).26” —

AZ’s SB 1070, the new immigration law

As suggested-by-proxy by my ver intelligent mother, I finally read this bill, which is really short. I’m no law expert by any, any, any stretch, but I’m not sure what some of my conservative friends are talking about - there’s little context that reduces how racist this is. The total lack of a definition for “reasonable suspicion” is clearly intentional since this is the only place it is really discussed.

Sharks Can Become Invisible → news.discovery.com

Scientists discover sharks can become whatever color they want until they eat you because you didn’t see them and because they are EXTRA powerful.

On an unrelated note, I will be working on a dude ranch for the rest of the summer and probably not around much blogwise. Don’t worry, Finn, I’ll catch you up on WNBA at the end of the summer. Watching it is a man’s game, so you’ll need my insight.

“You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven [Spielberg, who directed]. But the actor’s job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn’t do it. So that’s my fault. Simple.” —

Well said, Shia, well said.

“As a new law in Arizona makes the failure to carry immigration documents a crime, a growing number of municipalities are issuing IDs to make the lives of illegal immigrants easier.” —

NYT

It’s nice to think that entire AZ towns can pull together to subvert the new law.

Ginger Twin Sister

Ginger by Twin Sister

I post this not only because it’s great and been in my head for weeks, but because it makes me wonder if the phrase “Ginger” is becoming really mainstream in the US. I mean  more dominant than “red head”. And it’s kind of a negative phrase too? Based on this midly NSFW ad among many others, I get the impression Gingers are at the bottom of the hair castes in Australia and I think the stigma is spreading.

“Horne, a Republican running for attorney general, said the program promotes “ethnic chauvinism” and racial resentment toward whites while segregating students by race. He’s been trying to restrict it ever since he learned that Hispanic civil rights activist Dolores Huerta told students in 2006 that “Republicans hate Latinos.” —

in the article in which Arizona’s State Schools Chief is quoted defending the decision to ban ethnic studies classes in public schools.

Trying to prove that Republicans aren’t racist by banning classes focused on Latino history is NOT AT ALL PROVING THEIR POINT, Tom. The idiocy here is astounding.
